Painted Curtain Tutorial

What to do when you can't order the curtains you want? You make them! Sometimes out of the least likely items.

What you need:
Lowe's Canvas Drop Cloths
Painters Tape
Fabric Medium (you can find this at Michael's)
Paint
Paint Brush
A LOT OF TIME

First, take your canvas drop cloth and do yourself a big favor run it through the dryer or iron it.  It will make it softer to touch and all the wrinkles will disappear.  Then start making lines.  I measured 12 inches from the top and drew a line (this would be the canvas color stripe) and then from that an 8 inch stripe (your paint).  Then add your painters tape.  Make sure you check all the edges along the painters tape that it is actually down or paint will go into your other spaces.

Then take your paint.  I used  just regular paint from Lowe's because the color choices are endless!  If you do this you MUST get fabric medium.  It will not change your color but will allow your fabric to bend and not be "crunchy" when it dries.  The mixture should be half paint half fabric medium.  Then paint.  I used a brush because it was better for the tape edges and then just didn't feel like switching.

I couldn't risk getting anything on my rug in the living room so I painted in the kitchen.  Hindsight I would have done it when it was warm and painted outside.  It was hard to move in there.  Also tape down the edges of the cloth so that it doesn't move.  FYI painters tape will not work for that job.

Finished product.
I put up our bedroom pics with hesitation.  It is a work in progress so please do not judge.  On the master bedroom renovation to do list is: new custom headboard, another dresser, new pillow coverings, wall art, and a few other odds and ends.
