I was driving to Harrisville last Saturday to take a pie baking class with my grandmother. While driving along I couldn't help but notice all the amazing colored leaves. It was beautiful- an unexpected beauty. Then I started thinking about all the hikes, runs, walks, drives, pretty much anytime I've ever been outside and how I find the smallest of things beautiful.
My family went on our annual labor day camping extravaganza and stopped at Blackwater falls. While the falls are pretty I got bored with them very quickly. There were tons of people around, you knew what you were going to see on your walk to them, and it seems that in those situations the things you went in search of don't really match your expectations. I thought I would love the falls, but within two minutes I was ready to head back to the car. It was an expected beauty.
So while driving I realize that I love to be surprised which is weird because every ounce of me is a planner!!! When there aren't 40 other people enjoying the view, you feel as if it was created just for you. That God just painted that landscape for you to enjoy, and then made sure you were aware of how gorgeous it was. I'm sure hundreds of cars drove that same stretch that same day, yet I noticed.
There is something so special about the unexpected beauty that surrounds us. Then tonight as I was reading through old journals, which I do from time to time. I found some amazing things written in them, little nuggets that I had forgotten about. Beauty I wasn't expecting to find. I love reading through old journals, because you've got to love the journey as well as the destination. Most of the nuggets I found were when life seemed the most grim. Unexpected!!!!!!!
Here is one of them a quote about Winston Churchill, but can very easily be applied to Paul, and hopefully us!!!!
"The first time you meet him, you see all his faults, and the rest of your life you spend discovering his virtues."
Let each of us be an unexpected beautiful spot in someone's day!
